Positives: Timeless design, plenty of storage space for a sports car, if you are tall you will fit comfortably, interior holds up well (no dashboard cracks or broken anything), amazing handling, fast once car hits its power band, plenty of parts out there for a 25 year old car, easy to work on and t’s a 911! Negatives: Hardtop takes two people to take off, if you put on low profile tires a large pot hole will give you a flat, ride is very harsh, loud so that a good radio is wasted, plastic rear window on Gen. 1 996’s are a compromise and it has serious blindspots.
    • Miata is the answer? How about 996 is the answer?

I, a guy in their late 20s, have always dreamed of owning a 911 but all the air cooled and water cooled ones cost very close to both an arm and a leg. So you could imagine my suprise when I looked at 996's and realize that it was an obtainable dream, just like the 911's used to be back in the 2000s I greatly enjoy my car, a 2001 996 c2 6mt hardtop with m030 and 140k miles. P.O. put 100k of those miles and enjoyed every minute of it!

This is my second review of my car. For some reason kbb will not let me edit the original. search Mark p After owning this car for a decade now Feb 2015 Feb 2025 started with 89,500 miles, Now 107k So the car has been cared for in my opinion well. It gets reviewed and maintenance by my mechanic every year. He replies its great, enjoy. I can say, I am still super happy with the car. New Tires 3 yrs ago, and a few nick-nack repairs, maybe $2K + 1K tires, 3k interior (its 24yrs old and was just not a fun sit when driving) so we'll round up to 7K over 10 years + Buy price of 16K . In 10 yrs I am $23k / $200 a month all in. I think that is fair. to confirm I don't drive it alot. My takeaway is this is pretty cheap for a Porsche. Now this car sells 25 - 35k applying the same math add 7k your in a Iconic Classic Porsche Sports Car . Still sounds like a good deal 30-40 k over a decade. Just today, I said lets go for a drive to my wife after church. A polite - ok , but once we got going the mood was greatly changed, the road feel, the stereo blasting, sunroof open, punchy sprints, it felt as fun today , on the same road i have traveled on dozens of times as anytime in the last decade ( its one of my loops ). Still turns heads. I try to get this out 1x per month for 60-100 miles. As you read , why so little usage, its not the easiest car to drive. It's low to enter / exit if your 30-55 ears old not a problem , 60+ its a challenge to jump out of. And you drive this car. you want to give it some juice - which is awesome, because driving the my Lexus is roomy, and quiet , and smooth and boring... So drive the car when your in it. The car is very analog, so that's starting to be vintage. What interesting is 10yrs ago you would be hard pressed to fine a youtube review, now you can see many, so review first, and the overall theme is you feel the driving experience. If you and bump up to a 2009+ they are nicer, but double the price. My thought when I bought it was I had a budget 40k, my use was specific, just a zipper, or out on the town. I could invest in a car the would sit in the garage, and maybe appreciate, or buy one to enjoy, and take the extra cash and buy the S&P500 well its been a decade and i think the $20k, I did not spend made me more that the value than the car has, and I find no less of a great experience driving. Final Thoughts , buy it , you will at least break even in 5+ years. You can make worse decisions. Fun 5 Style 5 Motor 5 plenty of power Comfort 4.5 Storage 3 maybe a couple of soft bags , maybe 2 TSA Overhead bin bags Happiness 5 My 100 % rule, Its gotta be clean - almost spotless , So spare 30 mins when you get home to wipe it down. And 10 mins to get the dust off before you hit the road. A clean Porsche turns heads, a dirty one says I don't care, so just drive the Lexus. Mark p
